about

Driving home to Memphis from Nashville 2 days after Johnny Cash died, this song came to me. It was written in less than 20 minutes, and is still one of my favorite....it my homage to Johnny, Waylon and all the other greats that made country music so great.

lyrics

Heroes & Outlaws © Cowboy Bob.Sawyer - 2003

I was just a young boy
when I heard my first Johnny Cash song
And it didn’t take much before I was dancing and singin along
While others rocked & rolled,
I was riding that train
I could see the prison yards yeah, I was feeling his pain
I guess that man from Tennessee
had a way, of making me feel right
But now my heroes and outlaws are quickly fading into the night

When I first started to drive
I heard Waylon on the Radio
He was singin bout a Cowboy's momma from deep down in soul
He was the Black-sheep that Nashville turned their backs on then
Thank God he kept on singin, 'changed my life again
There was something bout that high ridin outlaw
that made me feel right
But now my heroes and outlaws have quickly faded into the night

Yeah the heroes of today don’t have what they had back then
It's just glitter & gold, that's all the outlaws want to win
But If you stand your own line,
you’ll make your own time,
Just like Hank Williams / (Jr.) did
Singin songs from the soul, that made us all feel right
But now our hero’s and outlaws are quickly fading into the night
